No, this doesn’t mean that your dog is going to be sitting at the computer taking a course. This means that there are programs that offer obedience training for dogs online – the human takes the course and then teaches the dog. This has become a very convenient way to obedience train your dog without having to attend a class in public. Classes with lots of doggy students can be distracting for your dog. Dashhounds – Dogs for Bad Spellers?

I gotta say, I am a stickler for spelling. Living in the South, we have a lot of creative spellers down here. But come on, Dashhounds? My dogs Skip and Bailey were insulted by this. They may not be extremely bright, but they are proud to be Dachshunds. When you think about it, Dashhound kind of fits – a little hound dashing around. But, it comes from the German work, Dachshund.

I saw this creative spelling in a newspaper article about our shelter. They have a litter of “Dashhound mix” puppies. Don’t get be wrong, the puppies are adorable. They look like a Doxie Yorkie mix. (I wish I had room for more, but my house is full of little guys from the shelter.) I just had to chuckle at the spelling.

There are more creative spellings for our little wiener dogs – check on Google and you will find them – Doxsunds, Dashunds, Dashies, Doxies, and Dachsund. I will be calling the shelter to educate them, not that it will do much good. I just hope those cute puppies find a nice home.

Dachshund Photo Contests

We all think our dog is the cutest one out there, right? So why not take some candid (or not so candid) photos of your dog and enter a contest? You, I mean your dog, can win some great prizes and even money! So get out your camera and take the perfect Dachshund photo. Contests are everywhere!

There are tons of pet and dog photo contests out there, you just have to know where to look and enter a bunch of them. The more you enter, the better your chance of winning. Do a search on Google for these types of contests. You don’t want to enter “Dachshund Photo Contests” as your keywords – use words like dog photo contest, or pet photo contest.

One site in particular, The Pampered Pet, runs a photo contest every month. The prizes on this site are awesome! For example, the January prizes included several pet related gift cards (most were over $50), dog collars, and dog toys. All you have to do is submit your photo and a few sentences about your pet. How easy is that?

Want to think bigger? Large companies like Sears, PetSmart, and Redbook magazine also hold pet photo contests. Again, look on Google for these contests. You may also find them on your groups and forums about Dachshunds. Photo contests are easy to enter and are popular around holiday time such as Halloween, Valentine’s Day, and Christmas.

What are you waiting for? You probably have tons of pictures already uploaded to your computer. Start submitting them in your spare time and win some great prizes!

Wiener Dog Races – Training

Wiener dog races are quite entertaining. The track can be 25-50 yards in length. Some people think these races are cruel and can cause back injuries, but Dachshund owners disagree. We take good care of our Wiener dogs and even train them for the races.

To start training for the Wiener dog races, your Dachshund needs to understand being rewarded with a treat. Stand at the end of the track and call your dog to run and get the treat. If your Doxie is like mine, they understand treats all too well.

Begin the training slowly and only go short distances. You will need a helper to stand at one end of the track and hold onto the Weiner dog contestant. The helper at the starting line can then run next to the Doxie towards you. When the dog crosses the finish line, give him his treat. Don’t train too much in one session. Your Dachshund shouldn’t have too many treats in one day, or do too much running.

Practice makes perfect. Keep working with your dog and consistently train for the Wiener dog races. When you go to an actual race, do a practice run. Make sure your pup knows you have a yummy treat in your pocket and he will be rewarded for running. But most of all, have fun and praise your Doxie for trying.

Dachshund Gifts – Salt and Pepper Shakers

Something that every Dachshund owner needs – wiener dog salt and pepper shakers! How cute are these? I saw these at a friend’s house and busted out laughing. Are you kidding me? I have seen Dachshund gifts like t-shirts, mugs, and planters, but this one was too funny.
This set would make a hilarious gag gift for any Dachshund owner. The funny (and maybe gross) part is that the seasonings come out the rear end of the shaker.

The Ugly Dachshund

This is actually a contradiction – there is no such thing as an ugly Dachshund! You are showing your age if you remember the 1966 film, “The Ugly Dachshund.” The movie starred Dean Jones and Suzanne Pleshette as the owners of a pack of Doxies who take in a Great Dane as part of their crew. I remember seeing this movie on Sunday nights on “The Wonderful World of Disney” on our black and white TV. Yes, I am old.

The Ugly Dachshund is a cute Disney movie with a bunch of Doxies scurrying around and a 150 pound Great Dane knocking everything over. It is G-rated entertainment for every Dachshund loving family. Kids will especially enjoy the vintage fashion and hairstyles in this old Disney film. but, the puppies are really cute and entertaining. And if your Dachshunds are like mine, they start barking when they hear other dogs on TV bark – so it gets pretty hilarious!
